Hey DA Fam,
Thought I would start this one off for the New Year. It’s the cover illustration for Palladiumbook’s quarterly publication, Rifter #57. This Rifter issue filled with a boatload of monsters for Palladium Fantasy & Beyond the Supernatural RPG lines, easily adaptable for RIFTS, can be ordered directly from Palladiumbooks at: [link]

Feature: Featured is a new Palladium Fantasy RPG monster created by Glen Evans, called a “Makara”. The Makara is a frightful monster allegedly created by an insane alchemist and summoner during ancient times. According to legend, he sought to build the ultiimate monster that no man or beast could hope to defeat. After creating half a dozen, he invited warriors from all four corners of the world and every single contender was killed. The magical beast has some wicked spells, formidable fighting prowess and a very nasty & game temperament to boot. Makara love to fight and nothing pleases these behemoths more than inflicting pain and suffering.

The Makara can be seen closing in on a female Elven Mage who is riding a stallion Unicorn.

Illustrator Remarks: I enjoyed the challenge this illustration prompted as its composition was not a typical fantasy monster. I love illustrating chimera concoctions and this one hit home for it was one of the most formidable creatures with it’s own unique signature. It wasn’t the standard dragon versus knight Fantasy illustration (nothing wrong with Dragons & knights) and for that I dove in. Rendering it with all the various textures was a challenge and I learned a lot of new techniques and harsh lessons.

See link for my lesson in going in too deep:

Process: Penciled the illustration on a Strathmore Bristol Smooth finish sheet of 14 X 17, 100 lb. Scanned it into Adobe Photoshop CS3 and utilized an Adesso Cyber Tablet M14 to complete the digital painting.

it's like a classic monster laden poster of a film that you wish they would make.

Wow! Thank You so much for the compliment! I wanted to take something new and non-typical and make it true Fantasy oriented! As to films, oh mannn...Even a Sci-fi Channel film could get me going XD

amazing..but i have come to expect nothing less from you. that tablet has fairly decent real estate considering its not "the" brand. how do you like it compared to the wacoms if you have used them

Thank You and I appreciate such a vote of confidence, though I have ways to go before such a standard can be upheld. The tablet does very well for me actually and I think its not to much of a difference between the Adesso and the Wacom, besides "possibly" paying for the name of the latter. I can't say tech support, because I have yet to have any issues or challenges, maybe that is where the distinction might be, I don't know. But for now I am happy with the Adesso, it's button programming, its sensitivity and its vast surface area. I am an advocate that I pay for what I need, and not for what others expect. A the end of the day, "IF" I have to illustrate using a cheap pencil & xerox paper then guess what, it's going down.

I'm sorry I've taken so long to comment. Looks like somebody has taken the Big Leap into digital painting! So far, so excellent - I can't wait to see your next piece. What I've learned is that the more you finish, the more you see to fix for next time. I'm sure the same is true for you; I can see where you had to drag yourself back to the *whole* piece from working on tiny details.

All I can say is keep going. Your work is awesome, and with this piece you've taken another leap forward! The only criticisms I have are (1) go ahead and use your pen tool to grab your elements, and (2) trust your amazing powers of light and shadow! You KNOW where the lightest lights and darkest darks will be; keep working everything out in black and white, then add your colors.

Breakout work, Charles!!! One more thing: How much RAM are you running with your new CPU?

Mann... Thanks Newtman!

I will be getting ahold of you very soon, got some plans in store for ya! As to the big leap, just dabbling more into it to cover the grounds, have to get better so that my 3D plunge will be OK. XD.

I am not sure what you mean with the pen tool, though I easily admit I don't use it, so I would be glad to hear & learn what you mean by grabbing the elements? I also am concerned regarding the lighting, because on my home CPU I see these rich shadows and highlights, but on a library cpu the illustration is much lighter in comparison, I am concerned as to which version everyone else is seeing?

As to RAM, 1 gig of ram for now, (don't laugh, but up until recent I was still at 128MB) though I know I need more, especially for any 3D rendering.
