Description

Hi DA Fam,

Here is an illustration that I did for the Rifts® Boardgame being licensed, developed and published by Carmen Bellaire's - Rogue Heroes® LLC, based on the famous RIFTS® RPG game created by Kevin Siembieda and published by Palladium Books®.

Pencils: Charles "Chuck" Walton II :iconchuckwalton:

The champion character depicted here is a called a "Wilderness Scout."

"Some folks is afeared of the woods, but to me, they's home sweet home. It's the city thet makes me feel a might uncomfortable."

A lot of city folk look down on Wilderness Scouts as uneducated rabble, but in the savage wilderness, they are the lords and ladies of the forest. A Scout know their way around the forest like the back of their hand. They consider themselves to be one of the woodland predators and are stealthy, cunning, resourceful and self-reliant. The Wilderness Scout knows many of natures secrets and can live off the land with ease and traverse the wilderness without leaving any trace that they were there. Although a Wilderness Scout may be sorely lacking in social graces, they are no stranger to technology and use high tech body armor and energy weapons, and are able to pilot hovercraft with the same skill as a horse. Regardless of origin, the character is a walking encyclopedia about hunting, trapping wildlife, and the land. Most are experts in Demon, Monster and Faerie Lore.

For those familiar with the role-playing game Rifts, I hope you enjoy this depiction of this iconic Wilderness Scout character class. For those of you new to Rifts, it is a post apocalyptic world where rifts (dimensional portals) have opened up onto Earth and have released a wide range of supernatural monsters, vast array of aliens, and all sorts of advanced technology, psionic abilities and more. Numerous factions across the globe now fight for the dominion or survival of Earth.

Rifts was one of my first RPG experiences that I truly enjoyed and I was thrilled to be able to contribute artwork for such a fantastic setting. This artwork is for the upcoming Rifts Miniature boardgame whose Kickstarter will be launching VERY soon. Check out Rogue Heroes LLC facebook page:

Chuck, this is a glorious rendition of one of my favorite Rifts classes. Your full-color pieces are phenomenal.

The background and lighting makes for a nice contrast to the dark hues of the central figure, and the helmet, skeleton and little rodent are especially nice touches that add a bit of intrigue and make me wonder what the story is behind this painting.

The figure and equipment has a sturdy and functional look to it. The coloring and limited hard pieces of armor suggests a character for whom movement and stealth are important, and the mottled coloring of the cape seems perfect for wilderness camouflage. The pose looks practical.

There's one aspect that you might consider when drawing future wilderness/stealthy characters. The coloring of the face and armor/equipment aren't bright or garish, but they seem a bit too clean too uniform in color for what I'd expect from a wilderness scout; ther are also a lot of shiny bits and edges that would glint in sunlight, making this scout fairly easy to see. I'm not suggesting something like a ghillie suit, but rather more use of the colors and variety you put in the cape between one panel/piece of equipment and another, perhaps a bit of camo paint on the face, and less gleaming and bright highlights on the equipment. Don't get me wrong, the figure looks awesome; it's eye-catching, fun, interesting, and appealing, it just seems like the glinting highlights and uniform dark grey don't quite match up well with the environment.

All in all , this is my new favorite Wilderness Scout piece of Rifts art, and I hope Kevin can find a use for it.
